What the Bonus Buy Feature Actually Does
Bonus buy slots let you skip the base game and purchase direct entry to the free spins round or bonus feature. Instead of spinning repeatedly and waiting for three or more scatters to land, you pay a fixed price shown on screen , typically between 50x and 100x your current stake , and the feature triggers immediately. The mechanic was popularised by studios such as Big Time Gaming and is now standard across thousands of UK-licensed titles. Most operators offer buy-ins at 60x to 100x stake, with the price calculated to roughly match the feature’s expected return. The maths is transparent: a 100x buy-in on a slot with 96% RTP still returns that same 96% over time , you are simply compressing thousands of spins into one transaction.
It is worth understanding that buying the bonus does not improve your odds. It changes the pace, not the probability. The volatility of the purchased feature is identical to earning it naturally, which means the same steep swings apply.
Costs, RTP and the Numbers That Matter
Prices vary considerably by provider. A typical Money Train-style buy-in sits at 80x stake, while some Megaways titles charge 100x for the enhanced feature and 75x for the standard version. Where two options exist, the premium version usually carries a marginally higher RTP , often 0.2% to 0.5% above the base game.
UK Gambling Commission rules require clear disclosure of buy-in cost and feature RTP before purchase, so the figures should be visible on the paytable. Check them. A slot quoting 96.5% on the base game may offer 96.8% on a 100x buy, or it may drop to 95.9% on a cheaper 50x option.
| Buy-In Price | Typical Feature | Stake Example (GBP) | Cost (GBP) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50x | Standard free spins | £0.20 | £10.00 |
| 75x | Enhanced spins | £0.20 | £15.00 |
| 100x | Premium feature | £0.20 | £20.00 |
Budget discipline matters more here than in standard play. A £1 stake with a 100x buy-in costs £100 in a single click , 500 spins’ worth of stake spent in one second. Set a session limit before you start and treat the buy button as a high-stakes decision, not an impulse.
Are Bonus Buys Right for You?
They suit players who value time and enjoy feature rounds over grinding the base game. If you have a modest bankroll, though, natural triggering is almost always the safer route , you cannot lose 100x stake in one press.
Responsible gambling tools apply fully. Deposit limits, loss limits and reality checks all cover bonus purchases, and UK-licensed sites must offer them. Use them. Gambling should stay entertainment, and help is available via GamCare on 0808 8020 133 if it stops being fun.
